Where did it all start?

The initial frustration came in the form of having disparate data spread across multiple computers and no central place for it all to live. The second centered on dispelling the myth that just because data was online didn’t mean it couldn’t be private.

We weren’t going to settle for storage as usual.

Unlike other companies in 2005 and 2006 who were focused solely on backup, we were eager to do something greater – build an online, de-duplicated central storage repository where all of your data could live regardless of where it might reside (on a Mac, Windows, Linux server, external drive, network volume… anywhere). Further, we didn’t want restrictions on elements like file size or type or built in limitations like bandwidth throttling. We wanted it to be fully open and inviting.

So we decided to do things in private…

In addition, it has to be a truly private place to store your data such that only you and you alone could ever have access. Even though this level of security wasn’t necessarily on the forefront of everyone’s minds and – further – that it forced us to make many decisions that made our job harder, we believed and still believe that privacy does matter. Thus the creation of our ‘zero-knowledge’ privacy. All of your data is encrypted on your computer before it is sent to SpiderOak. No one can access your data without your password, not even the experts at SpiderOak.

Securing Consumer Privacy with SpiderOak

Finding a truly protected third party cloud service can be a challenge as many “secure” services on the market have security gaps that leave private corporate and consumer data wide open to third party attacks and even governmental spying. One cloud storage and sync service that sets itself apart from the rest of the market is SpiderOak. Then everything started to work in sync.

Once the data was safely stored in this central storage repository, the ability to do all sorts of wonderful things became possible such as syncing across multiple computers, sharing folders and files with friends and/or colleagues, and providing access remotely on mobile devices and/or public computers.
